DomestiCITY

By Victoria Scott
10 October - 11 November 2005

The ideas that led sculptor Victoria Scott to produce the photographic series DomestiCITY surfaced when she became intrigued by the way in which very mundane everyday objects, tools of the 'housewife', took on a dramatic, mysterious and sensual character when transformed by winter sunlight.

A fleeting moment of light and shade is captured and the resulting photographs play tricks with our minds, conjuring up different images all together. It is somehow reassuring that one doesn't have to look too far for inspiration: the vacuum cleaner, the iron, the laundry basket, the dustpan and brush, the kettle, and the dishwasher. After all, home is where the art is.

As part of the DomestiCITY exhibition, Elizabeth Wright, of the Henry Moore Institute and West Yorkshire Sculpture Park, has written an essay in response to Victoria Scott's work. You can view it by clicking here.
