Simon Gilpin
'Beyond September'
March 4th - May 6th 2003
The work of Simon Gilpin was some of the most provocative ever seen at Brahm Gallery.
A cursory glance at his work could easily see the idle viewer dismiss his work as being exploitative of the events of September 11th. Deeper examination of the work and particularly the almost featureless, expressionless, non-descript faces of the figures in the paintings express a blank, emotionless resignation and acceptance of the kinds of images the population assimilates as 'normal'. What were once and at once spectacular, horrifying events and images merely become reference points to events, which all too soon lose their true meaning and become easily digested images that form popular culture.
Simon Gilpin is a Leeds based artist.
