These paintings help me make sense of 'stuff` and are in some way a metaphor for the working out of that 'stuff`. By juxtaposing two elements in a space a dialogue/relationship arises. The space itself suggests mood or climate. The dialogue can be contemplated and considered non-cognitively or cognitively.
It is important to recognise that painting primarily is a direct experience, therefore cognition and conceptualisation proceeds seeing, in the process of perceiving.
Painting is an arena for me to understand 'stuff` in a non-cognitive, non-rational way, as there is some 'stuff` that cannot be worked out through thinking and reason alone. I do not negate the cognitive process, however I do recognise that there is a large part of my being where that process is subordinate to another type of process. In this other type of process there is still awareness, in fact sometimes awareness is greater here than it is elsewhere. Because there is awareness present in this process I regard it as an equally valuable faculty of mind to investigate and analyse 'stuff`. I also regard his process a valuable resource to communicate from.
Painting seems to fit this other system better than other mediums, which is why I paint.
