Elizia Volkmann
'After Lee.'
26th June - 29th August 2003
Leeds Artist Elizia Volkmann exhibits a new series of enigmatic photographic images inspired by the work of the female photographer Lee Miller.
Elizia Volkmann works in a variety of media though predominantly photography and film/video. She graduated from Sheffield Hallam University in 1996 with First Class Honours in Fine Art and has exhibited throughout Britain and Europe since 1992. She has also received commissions from Photo 98, FACT and have had a number of projects funded by Yorkshire Arts, Northern Arts and the Arts Council of England.
After Graduating she became Honorary Research Fellow at Leeds Metropolitan University where she worked with the department of Sports and Exercise Science and the Department of the Designed and Built Environment on both art work and research papers which received considerable attention from the National press (The Times, Observer, etc), International press (Gulf News and various European fashion and lifestyle publications) and television coverage throughout Europe and the United States.
In her photographic works she creates unique images using optical and photographic techniques rather than the current trend of digital manipulation. She cites the philosophy of David Lynch as a major influence, there being greater magic in physical and chemical techniques to enchant the viewer's eye than can ever be achieved with digital manipulation of the image.
This series of photographs is a narrative piece inspired by the tempestuous life of Lee Miller, who was both a great beauty and perhaps one of the greatest photographers of her time despite her career being short lived. This series is a memoir from the mind of a lover remembering an affair, the images like snap shots from dreams recalling a great passion.
