Through the Looking Glass

By Claire Carpenter
7 March - 31 March 2006

Claire Carpenter maintains that textures and colours have always influenced her work, having studied fashion and textiles before fine art. She feels that surfaces are as important to her work as the depth or subject matter itself, often becoming the subject of the work eventually.

This forthcoming exhibition is heavily influenced by Carpenter's excursions to New York, where she exhibited several times in 2005 with the help of a grant from the Arts Council. Produced from photographs and sketches made whilst there, and reproduced in either prints or drawings, this work explores her early responses to a new environment, an almost child like view of a mammoth inner city landscape; something Carpenter describes as "a bit of a 'through the looking glass' vision of the world."
